The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics seeks an Assistant Athletics Director of Human Resources to lead HR functions for the department.

The Departmental overview: The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 325 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs, with over 850 student-athletes participating annually in NCAA programs.

Position Summary

This position acts as the primary liaison between Cal Athletics Department and other campus divisions, internal departments, and external constituents. The role is the responsible party for all HR efforts, including hiring, separations, recruitments, recognition, salary benchmarking, employment contracts, department and University policies, payroll reporting, and HR support for the department. The position provides timely data for HR needs, including payroll data, general ledger reporting data, and budget information. It may conduct internal audits to ensure data accuracy and serves as a point of contact for the Cal Athletics HR Department. The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer for Athletics.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the HR function of the Department, including timelines, policies, communication and tasks.
  • Manages other Department HR staff and their workload, priorities and responsibilities.
  • Leads the hiring timeline and process for all Department hires.
  • Works with unit heads to set realistic timelines for key milestones and ensures steps are complete for posting jobs.
  • Leads the hiring process and communication between Department and candidates through offer acceptance.
  • Coordinates with CFO on payroll and compensation analysis; provides roster and payroll reports for staff and coaches.
  • Performs contract reviews and supports renewal timelines.
  • Supports unit heads in new position requests and reclassification strategies.
  • Supports organizational chart creation and staffing objectives to meet business goals.
  • Leads training on required documents for managers and new hire orientations.
  • Assists with resume reviews and interviews for senior-level and high-priority positions.
  • Leads PRA requests and manages difficult termination interviews, providing management feedback and process improvements.
  • Applies advanced HR concepts to counsel senior managers on HR issues and policies.
  • Provides guidance to managers on compensation programs and personnel procedures.
  • Supports units in administering HR policies and programs (employment, labor relations, wage/salary, training).
  • Co-manages the complaint reporting process.
  • Other professional development and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, with strong organization and problem-solving abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of organizational policies and HR procedures, and understanding of how work affects other areas.
  • Advanced knowledge of HR concepts including employment practices, labor relations, salary administration, training, and related initiatives.
  • In-depth knowledge of an HRMS and related software.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to present complex information.
  • Ability to handle difficult or volatile situations effectively.
  • Strong analytical, listening, and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge in contract review, tracking and analysis processes.
  • Ability to manage staff and set and meet objectives.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience.

Salary & Benefits
